There seems
to be a pattern developing here. I want to continue on similar lines as my last
blog, mainly because I cannot find anything else to write about. But although
this subject maybe highly on my mind at the moment, I promise that it will not
be too much of a continuing theme on this blog.
This is our
house pictured above, built by my Father-in-law in 1960, built of wood you can
say that this house lives. I mean the wood expands and contracts during changeable
weather and temperatures which leads to all kinds of strange noises. Creaks and
groans are often heard when the house is quiet and when the snow falls from the
roof it feels as if the whole building is coming down. So there you are,
nothing strange about that. But does that explain all the things that go on
here? “Coincidence” is a word that comes to mind quite strongly in some of
these cases, but I wonder whether that word “coincidence” can be used for all
the cases? Now as I have already mentioned the house is made of wood, it is
quite old and nothing has really happened here. So there is no history, oh and
I should add that if you read my last blog article, I have on the one hand an
over active imagination and on the other hand an Aunt, who thinks the whole
thing is absolutely rubbish. But bumps, noises of doors opening, even sounds resembling steps are often heard. The house is breathing, is the only explanation, but what of the objects that seem to move around, or the doors that are open when they should be closed? That cannot be all put down to the wooden house "breathing" Can it?
If anything happens here it happens quite slightly, I mean if I leave some object somewhere and return to it later, I get the feeling that the object is not exactly in the same place that I had originally left it in. Or it seems that things are being hidden, I can explain a couple of incidents, which spring to mind to explain what I mean. The most annoying or noticeable incident would have to be my glasses, I’ll put them down somewhere and come back to them a moment later and won’t be able to find them. The usual wandering around looking in places that I know they won’t be with little results, will bring me back to where I had originally left them and there they are. Now the question would end there, except when I start to think about the incident. Why did I not see them when I looked a moment ago? Ok, this can be explained, obviously the memory is going. But then the dish washing incident is more difficult to explain.
Every
winter, annoyingly at about the same time, just after Christmas, the kitchen
sink blocks. As a result, every year my wife and I try to unblock it, which
means that every year we end up not being able to use the dish washer for a day
or two as we “play” the game of trying to fit all the pipes we have taken to pieces,
back together again! As the kitchen sink is not in use, the washing up has to
be done in the Sauna house, nearly every house in Finland has a sauna, but I’ll
tell about that at another time. Water is boiled in a kettle, taken to the
sauna where I wash the dishes, as the water cools there is need for more hot
water. I put the dish brush down beside the bowl to get more hot water. When I
return the brush is not there! This is a fact, I looked everywhere for it,
which was easy as the sauna is not that big. Ok, I must have taken it to the
kitchen with me when I went to collect the hot water. Now I knew that I did not
do this, but I went through the motions anyway, but no brush. Fed up with the
whole thing I decided to leave the washing up totally, so I went off in a huff
to the bedroom and there on the bed is the brush! Now I know I did not go to
the bedroom at anytime during the time I was washing the dishes to the time I took
the hot water to the sauna room to continue my work. So how did the brush get
into the bedroom?
Lastly I will mention the doors, I am always getting told off for the doors! The sauna door for example, should always be closed otherwise the cold air comes into the kitchen. But often we find the door open, the cats can't open it, but there it is open and I get told off by the wife. Cupboard doors in the bedroom are another problem. We have three of them and often they are always open, so here is where the breathing house comes in. Could it be that the stucture moves at certain times enough to knock the catch and the door swings slightly open? Possibly, but still not a satisfactory explaination.
But then
something strange was witnessed by someone who was not a member of the family.
I was talking to a friend on Skype last year by video phone. At some point
during the conversation, needed to leave the room. All of a sudden I heard her screaming on the
computer, so I went back to find out what was wrong. The bathroom is situated behind
the chair in front of the computer and my friend went on to tell me that she watched the door open by itself, as if someone
was coming out of the bathroom. The thing is, if she had not seen this with her
own eyes, I would not have been able to tell if the door was open all the time
or not and actually would not have given it a second thought.
